How to Register a Domain Name

Reserving a domain name is easy and very cost friendly. The big name companies like Register.com and NetworkSolutions.com charge ridiculous prices such as $30-35/year for one domain name, and you get the same service at WebsitePalace.com.
It doesn't matter where you register your domain.  Almost every registrar provides the same services.

Brandable or Keyword Domains?

For search engine optimization (SEO) purposes, many experts recommend registering a domain with keywords you want to be found for. While this was a must years ago, it's not quite the necessity it once was.
Some people prefer to go for a shorter, brandable domain that's easier to remember -- especially because so many "good" domains are taken these days.
So instead of registering a keyword-rich name like FishingAdviceForBeginners.com, a person may choose to go with FishZingo.com. Zingo is a made-up word, but it keeps the domain short, brandable and easy to remember.
I personally think you should try to use the keywords you plan to target as long as you can keep the domain reasonably short (2-3 words) and readable. When your name is descriptive, people immediately know what your site is about.
Having said that, don't make your domain name so long and awkard that it's hard to read and remember. It's really about finding a balance. Also, don't be shy about bouncing ideas off your friends and family before registering.
Here's another tip. Write the name down to give you an idea of what it may look like on business cards, T-shirts and other printed materials.
Remember, your domain is a big part of your brand, so take your time coming up with the right name for your site.

You May Want to Protect Your Privacy

As you're registering your name, you will be presented with the option of keeping your domain name private - a deluxe feature you may want to take advantage of.
A private domain registration will keep your information (name, email address, etc.) out of the global Internet database, and will prevent a lot of spam from reaching your email box.
Even though registering a "private" domain is not mandatory and will not block all spam, it is a great idea if you want to keep your contact information out of the domain registry database. Some people want to register domains anonymously, so this is the reason this option is available.

Free Websites & Making Money Online Don't Mix

It amazes me how many people tell me that they want to start a business website but don't want to invest any money. I don't know of a single successful website owner that created their business website on a free host.
If you were starting an offline business, you'd plan on investing some money right?  Well, doing business on the web is no different.  If you don't plan to invest anything to start a business then I'd have to question how serious you are about this venture.
I've been making money on the Internet for over a decade and I have YET to read a success story from someone hosting their site on Blogger.com or Yola. It's no coincidence that successful people own their own domains.
Plus, you can't expect people to take you or your site seriously if your website address starts with something like is http://myfreesite...
And if the address doesn't tip your visitor's off, the banners and pop-ups you'll be forced to display sure will.  Also, the templates (if any!) they provide are generally very basic and lacking a professional appearance.
Think about it. Wouldn't you be a little suspicious if the web address of a business was something like http://members.aol.com/users/myhomepage.html with pop-ups and banners instead of www.companyABC.com?
Web surfers are becoming much more Internet savvy and they can smell a "cheap site" a mile away.  You don't want to lose credibility and potential customers because of the unprofessional feel.
Any time someone sends me their "business" site on Blogger.com I immediately discredit the site. Sorry, but that's what most people do. Free web hosts just aren't taken seriously in general.
Not to mention, you can only do some much with them. So if you want to add shopping carts, order forms and additional interactive features you probably won't be able to do this because most free hosting companies don't offer that kind of functionality.

More Problems Free Website Hosters May Encounter

It is quite expensive for these companies to run a free hosting service because the company has to pay for the space and the bandwidth (traffic) to host thousands of web sites. And since they are offering these sites for free, some companies find themselves loosing money very quickly.
They try to keep their service free by slapping banners on the member's pages, hoping that people will click and purchase products...but think about it...how many banners have you clicked on lately?
Exactly.
Then some may try to redeem themselves by charging a "small" fee for their service. And of course, if you aren't willing to pay for your site, you can say "bye bye" to all of your hard work.
If you haven't read my story, here it is again.
Almost all free website providers let you know in their terms and conditions that there are NO GUARANTEES when it comes to keeping your available.  Which means they reserve the right to remove your site at anytime, regardless of how much work you've put into it.
If you're still thinking of using a free host after all that, then I'm not sure there's much more I can say to convince you. If money is tight, I can certainly respect that.
As I said earlier, I'd rather you wait and save some money instead of starting free and planning to upgrade later. Sorry, but in my opinion free hosting is almost always a bad idea -- especially for long-term, business/money making websites.

My recommendation is to register your own domain name and build your site from scratch.

Which is Better SBI! or Standard Hosting?

That all depends on you. You can be successful with either. I sure have. The question is, What are you most comfortable with?

Feedburner & RSS Help

Once you create your blog, you'll want to learn a bit about RSS feeds and how to mange and promote your blog's feed.
RSS stands for really simple syndication and it's a file (often called a web feed) that contains information about your most recent blog posts.
So if someone wants to keep up with your newest content, they can subscribe to your feed using their favorite RSS reader.
I use Google Reader to keep up with blogs I follow, but there are a ton of free RSS readers available. The Firefox browser even has one built in to the Bookmarks feature.

What is Feedburner?

Feedburner (FB) is a free service owned by Google that tracks information about your RSS feed. It reports how many subscribers/readers you have and also provides ways to promote and display your feed content.
You can display statistics by simply copying and pasting the provided code. For example, see the number in the red box below?
This is how many RSS feed subscribers/readers I have on my blog today. The number updates everyday based on statistics Feedburner gathers about your feed's readership.
So Feedburner allows you to display this info on your site if you wish and you can customzie the color of the widget. Of course, if you'd rather not announce your stats to the world, you can view them privately in the comfort of your own Feedburner account.

What is My Feed URL?

Before you get started with Feedburner, you need to find out your blog's feed address.
1) If you are using Blogger, look at the bottom of your blog template. There is probably a link that says something like Posts (Atom). Hover your mouse over the link and right-click, then choose "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Shortcut".
2) If you're using WordPress then your RSS feed is probably something like
yourdomain.com/feed or blog.yourdomain.com/feed (if your blog is on a sudomain).
This is the feed URL of your blog and it's automatically updated when you make a new post.

Joining Feedburner

When you join FB, the first thing they will ask you to do is "burn your feed." This is where you enter the URL that I showed you how to locate above.
That means you are going to redirect this original feed URL to a new Feedburner address for tracking and reporting.
So instead of using the original blog feed address, you will use your new FB address for promotion. Now, when telling people to subscribe to your blog, you will send them to the FB address.
For example, the Feedburner address/URL for my blog is...
http://feeds2.feedburner.com/2createawebsite I now use that instead of
http://blog.2createawebsite.com/feed (my original WordPress feed that I burned to Feedburner.)
Of course, if anyone happens to find the old address, Feedburner will redirect that subscriber to my new feed and record the stats accordingly.
Now you're ready to start promoting your feed so people can subscribe to it.
Most people link to their feeds using the infamous, orange RSS icon and a hyperlink. An example is below...

I would highly recommend making your feed link visible. If your audience loves your site, they'll be looking for this link.

Displaying Your RSS Feed Items on Web Pages

One cool thing about FB is that you can publicize your feed data very easily. Say you have a website and a blog and you want to show your most recent blog post titles on your website's homepage.
This is simple to do with Feedburner. You just go to the "Publicize" tab and select "Buzz Boost." Follow the steps, copy and paste the code into your site and your latest blog posts will automatically populate on your site.
Here's an example...
I used Feedburner to burn a feed from my forum. (vBulletin forums automatically generate RSS feeds for each forum.)
So if I want to display the latest posts from my Blogging forum, I just burn the feed to Feedburner, copy and paste the necessary code, and FB will automatically display my most recent posts/discussions from my forum's Blogging section.

How to Create a Blog

The content is usually organized by date and category with the most recent post/content displaying first.
If you look at this site, the content is organized by content and not by date or category. There are also no comments.
This is a static website I created with Dreamweaver.
So it's important to think about how you want your content to be organized by default.
Having your visitors view/sort your content by date and category may not be the optimal solution for every kind of site because the older content will get buried over time.
Have you ever visited a blog and had trouble finding what you're looking for because of the content organization?
This is because the owner didn't do a good job of making use of static pages and linking to useful content to help you navigate through it.
Blogs are awesome for highlighting new content, but if you don't take the time to organize your content effectively, your important information can get buried.

Blogs Are Perfect For...

If you plan on creating the kind of website where you're just highlighting newsworthy information on a very specific niche, then a traditional blog format is ideal.
Think TechCrunch.
It's a site that features the latest and greatest info about technology. So it makes sense to just sort the content by category and date because people coming there just want the most recent information.
Also, if they are interested in a certain kind of content, they can browse by category (i.e. Gadgets, Social, Startups, etc.)
If you plan on writing a lot of newsworthy content on a certain topic then a standard blog is perfect for this.
However, if you are creating a tutorial site where a static layout is more appropriate (like this one) then you may want to either consider a static site or make your WordPress site more static by using WordPress menus, Pages, etc. like I did on my hair website.

FTP Tutorial - How to Use FileZilla

FTP stands for "file transfer protocol" and it's the process of moving files from one location to another.  In this instance, you will be moving files from your local environment (i.e. your computer) to your web host.
PLEASE NOTE:   Be sure your host provides FTP access before you continue (most free ones do not).  Powweb is one of the most reputable web hosts around.  They support FTP uploads and you'll receive a ton of disk space for a low, low price.
If you are using a free website provider and do not have access to FTP then there is probably some kind of upload option in the file management area where you can upload files to your website.  Be sure to check with your host to find out how to do this.

The Impact of Colors on a Website

On the internet we don't deal with face to face selling. The internet is a visual and psychological medium. The words, or sales copy, on your website have by far the greatest psychological impact on your visitors and thus becomes your most important communication and sales tool.
But another important psychological aspect of your website that is often overlooked are the colors. Yes, that's right... I said colors.
Just as you use words to express yourself, colors can be used as an expression as well and are a language all on their own.
The background color of your website, the color of your header, the color of your text, headlines and sub-headlines etc. can all have a psychological impact on your visitors.
Here is a list of some of the common colors and what type of psychological emotion they invoke in people:
RED is associated with love, passion, danger, warning, excitement, food, impulse, action, adventure.
BLUE is associated with trustworthiness, success, seriousness, calmness, power, professionalism.
GREEN is associated with money, nature, animals, health, healing, life, harmony.
ORANGE is associated with comfort, creativity, celebration, fun, youth, affordability.
PURPLE is associated with royalty, justice, ambiguity, uncertainty, luxury, fantasy, dreams.
WHITE is associated with innocence, purity, cleanliness, simplicity.
YELLOW is associated with curiosity, playfulness, cheerfulness, amusement.
PINK is associated with softness, sweetness, innocence, youthfulness, tenderness.
BROWN is associated with earth, nature, tribal, primitive, simplicity.
GREY is associated with neutralality, indifference, reserved.
BLACK is associated with seriousness, darkness, mystery, secrecy.
You can use the above as a guide when choosing colors for your website. It really boils down to your target audience and what psychological message you want to convey in colors.
Blues and white backgrounds work best for business sites. Maternity sites should consider some pink. Golf or lawn sites sites should consider green. Food sites should consider red, etc.
There are also numerous shades of the same color that you can use too. Here a link that lists 216 colors that work in all browsers (original link provided by the author is now broken so added a link to my own page that has some hex color tools):
It also boils down to common sense too. As far as using colors in text, black text on white backgrounds may be dull but it is the most readable and pleasing to the eye.
Yellow text on white background is not only unreadable, but causes eye-strain which will have people leaving your site quickly. Nothing will lose sales faster than eye-straining text.
In conclusion, not only can the sales copy on your website have a psychological impact with words but the colors you use can as well.

Advice on Learning Web Design

I am often asked how I learned to be a web designer.
First of all, I usually laugh at that question because I am not a designer. :)
I'm a self-taught affiliate marketer who has learned enough about coding and software to build a decent website.

Why Bother Learning Design When There's WordPress?

Now that WordPress is so popular, many people forgo any kind of web design training because it's just not as necessary as it once was.
You just pick a theme and BOOM, you've got a website!
However, WordPress themes are driven by CSS and understanding how it works will help you greatly when it comes to manipulating your existing theme.
I use CSS a lot to float and position elements on my pages so having a basic understanding has helped me a lot. I don't agree with the "rely on WordPress" philosophy that many go by today.
Someone on YouTube once told me my advice about CSS was "old school" because of WordPress. I completely disagree. As long as tools like WordPress, Joomla, etc. are driven by CSS for the design, it will always be relevant.
Most people eventually discover that if they want full control over their site's design and theme, they have to learn some of the fundamentals.
The headers on this site and my blog are completely driven by CSS code that I wrote. I like to position elements where I need them to go, so that's one lesson I often rely upon even though I do use WordPress for my blog.
WordPress was not around when I created this site, so I was forced to learn more about coding. I'm actually glad it happened that way.
Having said that, here are the resources I recommend if you're interested in learning more about web design...

W3Schools

I used to be hesitant about recommending this website because their presentation was a bit too technical for the average newbie.
However, they've revamped their site a lot and it's a lot friendlier now. This is definitely the place to go if you're a "learn the fundamentals" type of person.

HTMLDog.com

This is another great fundamentals website. It's a bit more friendly than W3Schools and the organization is better in my opinion.

Lynda.com

This is where I learned a lot about Dreamweaver, which is the software I use to manage this website. If you are one who loves to learn by video, then this is the site for you.
Lynda.com has tutorials for almost every web-related software you can think of. And what's great is they are always up to date in spite of the ever-changing technology world we live in.
There's a membership fee, but anyone who has used them will tell you that it's well worth it.

Artisteer

If you're the kind of person who just wants to generate a quick design on the fly for your website, and you don't necessarily care about learning code, this is your tool. It works with WordPress, Blogger, static sites like this and even Joomla.
A lot of designers actually use this software for inspiration and to help generate ideas for their clients. It's a pretty neat tool. Watch my video review on Artisteer.

Dreamweaver

As mentioned, this is the software I used to create this site. Dreamweaver is for static HTML/CSS websites like this. Even though you could use it to develop a blog theme, it's not typically used for blogs.
DW has built-in templates but they are very simple and bare. They are nothing like you'll get with Artisteer or WordPress. For example, this original template I'm using now was comprised of two white columns with a empty header, footer and no images. It was completely bare with the exception of filler text.
Thanks to my knowledge of CSS and using Dreamweaver, I was able to jazz it up to what you see now.
There is definitely a learning curve with Dreamweaver and many will say it is not for beginners. It also assumes you plan to learn CSS. I absolutely love DW, but understand it is not for everyone.

Study Existing Sites - The Way I Learned

Quite honestly, I learned a lot of what I know by either viewing the source code (right-click mouse and select view source) of other sites or downloading free templates and editing them.
The advantage of this method is it's an easier way to learn. The disadvantage is you don't necessarily learn all the fundamentals... at least not in the right order. This can cause problems when it comes to troubleshooting your design.
Nevertheless, this is how I learned. I spent many days downloading free templates from CSSTemplates.org and editing away until I learned how to make the templates do what I want.

How I Doubled My Blog Traffic in 2 Months

I just got serious about blogging in December of 2007.
I had a blog on Blogger.com for 2 years, but rarely updated it.
Then in November of 2007, I installed Feedburner and discovered I had 430+ subscribers. I was shocked due to the fact I hardly ever blogged.
I didn’t want to lose those subscribers or the traffic, so I decided to challenge myself and see if I could generate an even larger readership.
After switching to WordPress last December, I got more serious about my blog efforts.
I subscribed to Darren Rowse’s blog, ProBlogger.net – a very informative and inspiring blog to newbies and seasoned bloggers alike.
Then I started doing some key things…

1. I am More Selective With My Topics

When I had my Blogger blog, I would often re-write information that was already on my site. I didn’t put much effort into the subject matter of my posts.
(Yawn!)
Now, I’m much more selective. I try to think more about my audience’s needs and what they would find interesting.
And even if I choose a topic that has been blogged about a lot, I try to add my own spin to make it unique. For example, how many articles have been written about “How to Write Good Content” or something similar?
Too many, right?
Well the reality is, most people don’t write good content and they find it a chore or get writer’s block.
So I blogged about this very issue and addressed it from a new angle in a blog post titled “Is Writing Content a Chore for You?” An email I received inspired much of the content in the post.

2. I Make Use of Some Handy WordPress Plugins

Some people go hogwild on the WP plugins. While there are some really cool ones out there, you don’t want to make your blog so plugin-licious that it’s difficult to navigate and read.
You can have too much of a good thing, but there are a few that really come in handy.
Two plugins I believe made a difference in my traffic and readership have been the SiteMap and Related Post plugins.
The SiteMap plugin is important because it generates and submits your blog’s sitemap (an XML listing of all your posts) to all the major engines. Once you install it, the plugin works its magic automatically.
Some of my posts get found in the search engines only hours after I create them.
The Related Post plugin is useful because it encourages people to read more of my blog. It helps them discover posts they might not have discovered had they not seen the “Related Post” link at the end of a blog entry.
Before installing this plugin, I noticed my most recent posts always received 95% of the traffic. Now, older posts are getting more traffic.

3. Visual Appeal

I doubt my graphics have made a huge difference in my traffic, but every now and then I get an email or comment from someone who says they love my blog images and graphics.
One lady says she can’t wait to see what kind of graphic I’ve created to go with the post.
Some of my graphics include pictures of people and things found on Photos.com (I’m a subscriber.)  Usually I’ll add my own flavor to them with good ole’ PhotoShop.
However most of the graphics like the one in this post were created by me. Learning PhotoShop has been a great asset to my business.
While the content is what really makes or breaks a blog, a few appealing images and graphics can help round out your blog’s appearance and give it a more professional feel.

4. I Blog More Often

Blogging more often is not always a good thing. If you don’t have anything interesting to say then no point in blogging just for the sake of blogging.
It’s not worth losing your subscriber base so be sure your posts have substance.
When you blog often, the search engine spiders will visit more frequently, and this could help your traffic. Blogging often also keeps your subscribers coming back regularly and keeps you on their radar.

5. I Interlink My Blog With My Main Site

I am fortunate enough to have a site that already receives over 7,000 visitors per day, so of course that’s a huge help. When I create a new post, I look for relevant content on my site and provide a link to that entry.
When I used Blogger, I didn’t cross promote all that much. Now, I’m much more conscious of opportunities to interlink the two. So if you have a website and a blog, keep your eyes open for ways to link the two together.

6. Competitor’s Blogs Keep My Juices Flowin’

First and foremost I want to make clear that I am not suggesting you copy someone’s content. Not only is it illegal but it’s highly unethical and dishonest.
But there’s nothing wrong with getting ideas from another blogger’s topics.
For example, if you see a blogger has written about the iPod Touch features (a topic that is overdone); rather than just re-wording what they wrote, create your own entry but take a different approach.
Maybe your post could be something like, “10 Reasons the iPod Touch is Better Than the Zune”. You’re writing about the same topic, but you’re taking the content in a new direction.
Not to mention you could capitalize on a new audience – people looking to compare the Zune and the iPod.
I encourage you to take a look at your competitor’s blogs, get ideas and look for ways you can create your own fresh, unique content.

7. I Switched from Blogger to WordPress

I wrote a post about this a while back, but it is worth mentioning again. I really do believe WordPress is a much better platform because of all the plugins and flexibility.
Blogger is probably easier to setup, but WordPress is pretty user-friendly too – especially if you have a Web host that offers CPanel. (I use HostGator and setup this blog in 5 seconds.)
I have much more control over my layout without having to edit the raw code (like you do with Blogger). Plus, WordPress breaks up the template into separate files so it’s easier to figure out what file controls what section of your blog.
Not to mention, WordPress has much better design templates, in my opinion.
And as I said above, additions like the SiteMap Plugin also help get your posts spidered and indexed faster.

8. I Craft My Titles More Carefully

I discovered titles that pose a question or contain a bit of shock value generate the most clicks. My recent entry “Would You Like $57,000 In One Month?” has a little of both.
Usually my newest post wins the “Daily Traffic Award” but this post is 2 weeks old and still beats out my newer posts on some days.
Taking time to develop a good title can make a huge difference. Particularly since more and more people use RSS to keep track of their favorite blogs.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so make that title count!

9. I Give Away More Freebies

Who doesn’t love something free, right? Plus, it’s a great way to build loyal fans and viral traffic (because they’ll tell others who tell others and so on.)
But I have to be careful with this one because I want my freebies to have value. I hate it when I see Webmasters giving away items that have been distributed over and over again, or freebies you can find anywhere.
How insulting and unoriginal.
If you want your freebies to go to work for you, take some time to develop something useful and unique.

10. I Share My Personal Success

I wasn’t comfortable doing this at first. I felt I was bragging, but I slowly found it builds credibility. And I noticed other successful people often do the same thing.
If you’re trying to teach people how to do something, it helps to show them how your advice has worked for you.
While I don’t offer specifics about my income, I may display an AdSense check here and there or remind people I am making a living online.
It’s important that my audience knows I am actually walking the walk since I often talk about making money.

In Conclusion…

Doing the above things has not only helped double my blog’s traffic in 2 months, and my subscriber count is up by nearly 100 subscribers.

How to Make Money With Clickbank

One of my favorite affiliate networks is Clickbank because it sells digital goods and offers very high commissions compared to other affiliate programs.


In my opinion, Clickbank is far better than most book affiliate programs because the commissions are much higher. And because the products are digital, there is no shipping and handling, so they can offer higher commission to us affiliates.

Quality Control

As I've already mentioned, one unfortunate problem with CB is there are many low-quality "get rich quick" books and programs that people have purchased, so they assume that anything on Clickbank is a scam and it's just not true.
There are some very good books there. You just have to take the time to scope out useful ones that are relevant to your audience. You can't just promote something because it has a high commission tied to it, that will always come back to bite you. Your visitors will trust you less, and it will hurt your affiliate business in the long run.
Clickbank is no more a scam than Amazon, LinkShare or Commission Junction is a scam. It's an affiliate network that sells digital goods created by people from all over the world.
As an affiliate, you can choose which products you want to promote and how well you convert depends on...
  1. How relevant they are to your visitors
  2. How well you PREsell (educate and convince)
  3. The effectiveness of the landing page where the product is sold
  4. The amount of targeted traffic your site has

The Right Approach

The reason I have done so well with their affiliate program is that I take the honest approach. I buy books that relate to the theme of my website, review them and recommend them to my audience. If I don't like the book, I don't promote it. It's that simple.
This works well on my flat stomach website and this one. I don't promote a lot of products (less than 4) because there's no need to. I just find a few quality, relevant books and recommend them from various places on my website.

How to Use Clickbank

1) Go to their homepage and sign up as an affiliate. It's free.
2) Browse their marketplace for products related to your site's content
3) Review them and write a review. Be honest. Tell what you like and what you don't like a product. Then finish the review with an affiliate link to the book.
4) There's a great guide for helping you create links to the products for your site.

No Traffic. No Money.

Clickbank is not magic. If you don't have enough targeted traffic to your website, then you won't convert many sales. People who say "Clickbank doesn't work" probably don't have enough traffic coming to their websites and/or they aren't promoting the products properly.
This site gets over 20,000 visitors per day, mostly from the search engines and social media. Once you have that kind of traffic, you better believe you can make money with Clickbank or any affiliate program.

Succeeding With ClickBank

The key to success with CB or any affiliate program such as this is to build a niche website as I have done here with this site and many others.
The idea is to teach and write useful content around a certain topic and then recommend CB products that match your site's content.
You can write reviews or subtly recommend the products on relevant pages.
Making money online takes work and is not an overnight thing. However, it's very doable with the right approach and patience.

Increase Your AdSense Earnings

There are many ways to optimize your AdSense earnings. If you aren't experimenting with things like placement, color, layout, size and other variables, you could be leaving a lot of money on the table.
I increased my earnings by 20% just by following some of the tips mentioned in my video below.
